Jasper Dutz - 2011 Spotlight Jazz Instrumental First Place
What was your experience like participating in Spotlight from auditions to master classes?
My experience was enjoyable, from day one, I just tried my best to enjoy everything and improve as a musician and performer. I feel as thought I was successful.
What was it like performing on the stage of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion?
It truly was a feeling like no other. It left me with so many more aspirations than I possibly could have dreamed of and I feel so much more motivated to continue on my musical path.
What is your favorite thing about performing or studying your art form?
That there is no end to the road of music. Improvement is infinite and that is a very humbling, yet motivational thing to remember.
Who is your favorite singer/dancer/performer/composer, etc. and why?
There's too many brilliant musicians to be able to name just one "favorite" however, One of my favorite living artists in my field is saxophonist Dick Oatts. I aspire to study with him in college
Who has been your biggest fan and has given you the most support?
My Father, Grandmother, Mother, friends, School administrators and of course, Jeri Gaile.
What other skills or talents do you have that other people may not know about you?
I don't like to brag about myself, however I enjoy Card flourishes, Card Throwing, Video games, and Calligraphy.
Are there any setbacks that you have overcome which have challenged you to be a better artist?
I feel as though at a certain level, whether or not you succeed or fail is based upon how much the judge or the person listening to you enjoys your playing. Being able to overcome that has helped me greatly and made me even more grateful to have achieved this honor.
What qualities do you believe are your biggest strengths?
If I say being modest, then that pretty much makes me a liar, however I will say that my ability to continue improving without looking at what I've accomplished so far keeps my head straight. I often find that I need to be told multiple times that I truly deserve what I have gotten as opposed to being given it by luck. Either way, I'm equally grateful, and perhaps that is a strength?
What are your dreams/goals in life?
I aspire to be happy, and nothing makes me happier than playing music and bringing happiness to others in any way possible.
What are your plans after high school?
I want to become a Jazz Educator in addition to becoming a Jazz Musician. My Plans after high school are simple. I want to make as many people as I can, as happy as possible, doing what I love to do. I hope that I can succeed doing this for the rest of my life.
