| Our most widely requested professional development program, Teacher In-Services provide hands-on instruction to teachers in music, dance, theatre and the visual arts. Professional artists can present In-Services in any school or district. Educators may schedule a two-hour In-Service or plan a five-hour training day to explore music, dance, theatre or the visual arts. Help teachers align the arts curriculum with State standards and make content standards come alive through lessons with meaningful tasks and criteria for assessment.
Past In-Service programs include:
- Dance: From the Earth to the Stage
Teachers will learn Mexican dances in a theatrical context, developed and evolved from post-conquest sixteenth century hrough the twenty-first century. This session will focus on dances rooted in indigenous culture fused with modern elements.
- Music: The Art of Japanese Taiko Drumming
Teachers will be engaged in this hands-on lesson in the ancient Japanese art of drumming called Taiko, which provides musical, physical and mental training. The history and use of this art form will teach concepts of respect, cooperation, teamwork, positive attitude, self-esteem and concentration.
- Theatre: How to Turn a Story into a Play
A theatre-educator will examine specific techniques for choosing a story and transforming it into scenes to create a play. Teachers will learn engaging methods to integrate literacy skills in the classroom through imagination, creative listening and active participation.
- Visual Arts: Playing With Space
Visual artist Joan Harrison will illustrate simple tricks of composition and perspective to make lively urban landscapes. Educators will view a variety of paintings and discuss the ways artists use foreground, middleground and background to make things look interesting. Teachers will work with pencils, and then experiment with oil pastels to create original works.
